Augmentation/Reconstruction Implants, Facial, Cheek

Definition : Facial implants designed for augmentation and/or reconstruction of the cheeks (i.e., malar bones). These implants are usually inserted on top of the cheekbone during plastic and/or reconstructive surgery (either through the mouth or the lower eyelid). Cheek implants are typically precontoured sections of synthetic (typically silicone) or, less frequently, biologic (i.e., autograft, allograft, xenograft) materials intended to reproduce the desired external shape of the cheek; it may also be necessary to implant a bone graft. Facial cheek implants are intended to improve the physical appearance or to correct abnormalities that are congenital or the result of illness or trauma.
