Automation Systems, Medication Dispensing, Decentralized

Definition : Automation systems designed to provide and control medicine distribution throughout a healthcare facility. These systems typically consist of a combination of hardware and software that includes an appropriate server and a set of computerized medication-dispensing cabinets located in patient care areas and/or nurse stations. The systems can accommodate oral medicines (solid or liquid), ophthalmic drops, prefilled syringes, and topical preparations; they may be interfaced with pharmacy automation systems and/or with the hospital information system to provide complete medication management. Some systems include a computerized device (e.g., a portable or handheld computer) with bar-code label scanning capabilities that reads information from the identification wristband and on the medication package, to confirm that the administered medications match provider orders (i.e., that it is the right patient, right drug, right dose, right route, and right time). Medication-dispensing automation systems are intended to improve the safety and efficiency of medication dispensing, providing better access, proper identification of patient and medicine, control of consumption, replenishing, and inventory of medicines.
