Data Interface Systems, Medical Device/Information System

Definition : Data interface systems designed to allow medical devices of a healthcare facility to communicate with each other and with the information systems (i.e., interfacing) by controlling a continuous smooth transmission of data and/or other information between the computerized devices and the information systems. These data interface systems typically include electronic workstations at the point of care to process and control the information flow; and wireless and/or cable connections to the devices (e.g., physiologic monitors, ventilators) and the information systems (e.g., hospital data management, emergency and/or intensive care). The systems frequently include and/or are associated with a dedicated connection server. The systems are considered medical devices and must follow the regulations (e.g., FDA, EC) concerning these types of medical devices. Data interface systems that link medical devices with information systems also include appropriate software that contains the languages and codes that the applications use to communicate with each other and with the hardware. The software may include several different algorithms that work according to the characteristics of particular areas of the healthcare facility (e.g., intensive and/or emergency care, surgical areas, patient rooms). Data interface systems may be intended for a particular set of devices and information systems or flexible enough to permit the modification and/or integration of new devices and systems from different manufacturers and technologies.
