Irrigation/Distention Systems, Arthroscopic

Definition : Irrigation/distention systems used during endoscopic orthopedic procedures to keep the cavity of a joint (typically the knee, but also shoulder, elbow, hips and other joints) filled with pressurized distention solution. These systems expand the joint, improving visualization and enlarging the surgical field. Typically a bolus of solution is pumped through tubing into the joint and stays there, held in place by a closed stopcock or clamp on the outflow cannula, some systems include a mechanism (e.g., an automated pinch valve) in place of the manual stopcock or clamp.
