Manometers, Gastrointestinal Tract

Definition : Manometers designed to measure the pressure in one or more segments of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. These instruments typically consist of a computerized electronic measuring unit, recorders, controls, a display, and a set of catheters (transducer tip, water-perfused, or both) appropriate for pressure measurement in different segments of the upper and/or lower GI tract. The instrument and catheters may permit its configuration according to the particular needs of the user, including protocols that can be customized for different tests and/or patients. Dedicated GI tract manometers are available for assessment of the GI function in specific segments of the tract (e.g., esophagus-stomach, anorectal, small bowel, biliary, sphincter of Oddi) and for the assessment of esophageal and/or colonic motility.
