Orthoses, Spine, Lumbosacral

Definition : Spine orthoses designed for external modification of the structural and/or functional characteristics of the lumbar and sacral segments of the spine, providing immobilization and support. These orthoses consist of a structure that encircles the lumbosacral part of the trunk to keep that segment of the spine constrained. Lumbosacral spine orthoses are intended mainly to alleviate low-back pain by providing immobilization (i.e., motion control) and/or support to the lumbar spine; they may consist of fabric and/or plastic either elastic, semi-rigid, or rigid devices. These orthoses may be used also as spinal supports for daily activities (i.e., functional) use.
