Definition : Surgical retractors designed to temporarily separate and hold back the edges of surgical incisions in or around the anal canal and/or anal sphincter, exposing and providing access to the rectum. Anal canal and anal sphincter retractors usually consist of manual instruments, typically with two or three flexible bent blades and two scissors-like handles with a ratchet that permit self-retention. Anal/sphincter retractors are used in surgical and examination procedures of the anus and rectum.
