Definition : Surgical retractors designed to temporarily separate and hold back the edges of an incision performed on the skin, exposing and providing access to subcutaneous tissues and/or other superficial anatomic structures. These retractors usually consist of slender, handheld, manual instruments with a hook- or fork-like curved blade at the distal tip and an integral flat or tubular handle. Skin surgical retractors are used for cosmetic (plastic surgery) and/or therapeutic surgical procedures performed under the skin.
