Definition : Thoracic organ surgery heart retractors designed to temporarily separate and hold back the aortic valve while guarding the aortic orifice in the left ventricle of the heart, exposing and providing access to its structure during surgical procedures. These retractors are handheld, manual instruments usually including a cup-like blade perpendicular to the shaft at the distal end and a tubular handle at the proximal end. They are used mainly in heart procedures performed on the cardiac aortic valve.
