Dilators, Catheterization, Fascial, Urologic

Definition : Catheterization dilators designed for mechanically augmenting the diameter (caliber) of the internal layer of fibrous tissue (i.e., the fascia) of the urinary tract (e.g., the ureters) facilitating the introduction of catheters. These dilators typically consist of a radiopaque plastic shaft with a long distal tapered end that is located over a guidewire, facilitating dilation prior to catheter introduction. Urologic fascial dilators are intended for catheterization procedures performed in the urinary tract such as ureteroscopy and stone removal; they are usually supplied for single use in sterile packages.
