Dilators, Surgical

Definition : Dilators designed for mechanically augmenting the diameter of external/internal orifices and/or other anatomic structures (ducts) of the body during surgery. These dilators typically consist of an instrument with an oblique distal end to facilitate placement and to displace tissue near angled surfaces. Surgical dilators vary according to the surgical procedure to be performed and the part of the body to be enlarged; dedicated surgical dilators are available for procedures performed in specific anatomic parts (e.g. bile duct, heart valves). Surgical dilators are usually used to create access to surgical sites having tortuous geometries and/or requiring relatively long and narrow access to the surgical site.
