Recorders, Blu-Ray

Definition : Recorders designed to store large amounts of digital data (e.g., 25, 50 GB) with a greater density than digital versatile disks (DVDs) and are mainly intended for high-definition video signal storage. These recorders usually consist of an electromechanical device that includes external connectors to provide links to cameras or other sources of high-definition video signals (e.g., cable boxes, camcorders); an optical writer consisting of a "blue" (violet) light laser (typically 405 nm wavelength); data processors; controls; and an slot to place the disk. The recorders may include an analog/digital converter and other accessories such as microphones. Blu-Ray recorders usually have playing capabilities (using a laser reader) both for video and audio signals, either through integral amplifiers, displays, and loudspeakers (typical in portable players) or by providing output to high-definition video reproduction systems (e.g., monitors or television sets). Most recorders have capabilities to play not only DVDs but audio and video optical compact discs (CDs). The recorders are available in tabletop, rack mounted, and portable versions; Blu-ray recorders may provide direct access to Internet data through a local area network.
